A Church Is...
What makes a church, a church? How can it be defined?
Many people compose an answer from their memories and experiences of churches from their past. Or they are distilled from the snippets of stories collected over a lifetime. Since the church is God's idea, the best source for understanding is the Bible.
This fall, our sermon series is from the letter that Paul wrote to his protege pastor, Timothy. Each week we will define and refine our understanding of the simple phrase "a Church is..."
In the beginning of his letter Paul states, "The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith."
We can start to define a church by these two thoughts:
A church is... true in love.
A church is... true in instruction.
One of the defining principles of being a Christ follower is found in living as Jesus lived. To follow Jesus is to love as Jesus loved. So His church can be defined as love and this love can be shaped and matured through the instructions that God gives us through the Bible. Our hope as a church is to grow in love and be the church Jesus intends.
